Why Leadership Today Feels Broken

The gap between what leaders intend and what people actually experience

Something feels off in a lot of organizations right now.

Teams are working.  Strategies are in place.  Goals are being set.

But there’s still a disconnect.

And it’s not always disengagement.

More often, it’s uncertainty.

Organizations are moving faster than clarity can keep up.

But many teams are still left asking:

Where do I fit in this?  What does success actually look like right now?  Can I trust what I’m being told?

That’s where the breakdown begins.

Leadership hasn’t failed. It’s become misaligned with how people experience it today.

Not all at once… but gradually.

In the way leaders communicate, make decisions, and show up for their teams.

A simple example:

During my time leading Cub Foods, I once made a comment about personal accountability.

Not an indictment. Not an accusation.

Just a passing remark (one I made without context or how it would be interpreted).

Soon after, I noticed an excessive amount of finger-pointing during meetings.

The team thought I viewed accountability as a “Gotcha” moment.

A means to identify underperformers and cast blame.

That moment reinforced something important:

People are always interpreting signals.

Whether you intend them or not.

This is where trust is built or quietly lost.

Not in big decisions.

But in everyday interactions.

What people want from leaders today isn’t complicated.

They want:

  • Clarity in uncertainty
  • Consistency in how they’re led
  • A sense of connection to their work

The leaders who are getting this right understand:

“Uncommon Leadership is about transforming people and performance at the same time.”

Because results alone aren’t enough.

How those results are experienced matters just as much.

So the real question is:

Are you leading in a way people clearly understand…

Or in a way they’re left to interpret?
