A couple of years ago, shortly after I retired from Walmart, my grandson and I were talking about the news. Another day, another headline about a CEO, a pastor, or a public figure losing their job over something they should have known better than to do.
He looked at me and said: “Pops, this isn’t what leadership is. You’re not like this, are you?”
That question stayed with me. It’s the reason this book exists.

We have a leadership problem — and everyone under 30 already knows it
When I was young, the word leader came wrapped in an almost sacred trust. You stood a little taller around the mayor, the pastor, the principal, the CEO whose face was on the brochure. Those people weren’t perfect, but they carried a moral weight that steadied everyone around them.
Somewhere along the way, that drifted. Between 2023 and mid-2025, at least thirteen U.S. CEOs left their roles over misconduct — and the real number is almost certainly higher, because companies rarely announce the reason. When results are strong, too many boards are willing to look the other way.
Here’s the problem with that: leadership is an apprenticeship. Emerging leaders don’t learn ethics from a poster on the wall. They learn from watching what the people above them do when no one is looking. If self-service is the lesson we keep modeling, that’s the syllabus the next generation inherits.
If that’s what leadership has become, then I don’t want to be common. I believe it’s time for uncommon leadership to rise up.
What “Uncommon Leadership” actually means
It’s not about a title or the authority that comes with it. It’s about how you show up for people — coaching them, empowering them, and inspiring them to become the best version of themselves.
Uncommon leaders put integrity, humility, and service ahead of ego. They listen before they decide. They admit what they don’t know. They chase results not to look good, but to lift their teams and strengthen the institutions they’ve been trusted to steward.
One line from the book sums it up: people follow leaders, not instructions. Performance alone doesn’t create followership. Investing in people does.
